Usborne books! My mom used to use Usborne World History books… I devoured them! We also went to the library and checked out the limit on all the subjects we were studying.
For science? Try the Brown Paper Bag books. They’re a great series. They have stuff for math, science, and geography, they’re really fun to read (I hated math and science and I still got caught reading those books sometimes)

If you want to home shool your children you will learn as well! So teach them everything that apply’s to you and them.

We use the Kingfisher book, as well. We also have the Usborne Internet-Linked Encyclopedia of World History (I think that’s the right name) and the Usborne Internet-Linked Science Encyclopedia. Both are available from Amazon in hardcover for about $25. I love the fact that they have internet links available, so we’re not limited to just the books. Usborne keeps up with the links to make sure they’re current. You just log onto their site and link from there.
This is the first year I’ll be using Sonlight for Science and BiblioPlan for History. My boys are 1st and 6th, so keeping them together is going to be challenging!

The Dorling-Kindersley Encyclopedia books are excellent, especially the Science encyclopedia.

The Department of Natural Resources has a lot of good earth science material for free. I went to a teacher supply store and found some great stuff but this was in the old days. My baby is a Marine. We did a lot of work with Science magazines. They had to read something and give me a short essay, who what when where and how. I found with that box of magazines they read more than what they used but they learned quite a bit. Beware of the four foot tall scientist. My son learned to create fire with a watch. Good times, have fun.
